Domaine du Carpoulat is a sprawling vineyard in the Ténarèze region that was purchased by Yves Duflo, a former banana plantation manager from the Caribbean, in the 1970s. Shortly after, Yves hired Jean-Jacques Bordes as the cellar master. Jean-Jacques remained the cellar master after Yves’ passing and until 2024 when he retired and passed the torch to his son, Florient. The incredible knowledge and passion from the Bordes family shines through in their Armagnac after decades of work. Discovering Domaine du Carpoulat was not easy. Through a series of very fortunate random events, we landed in their cellar. This barrel was the last we tasted on our visit, and much like our experience discovering the Domaine, it felt like fate to stumble upon this barrel. It is the perfect first release from Domaine du Carpoulat.
Tasting notes
- Nose
- A beautiful bouquet of apricot, peach, honey, vanilla, and anise spice. this nose jumps out of the glass and draws new scents every time.
- Palate
- The palate is rich, lively, and full of fruit. Fruit compote, apricot butter, fig jam, and some sweet caramel.
- Finish
- The age of this spirit becomes more apparent on the finish, but the oak is very well integrated. Some darker notes of sandalwood and licorice come into play along with a variety of stone fruits.
The producer
Domaine du Carpoulat
Located in Fources, a medieval bastide village, Domaine du Carpoulat is a sprawling vineyard in the Ténarèze region of Gascony. This region is known for its clay-limestone soils that contribute to the full-bodied character of its Armagnacs.
In the early 1970s, Yves Duflo, a former banana plantation manager from the Caribbean, purchased the property and under his ownership, the estate began producing Armagnac. Duflo's dedication to quality was evident in his decision to retain older Armagnac barrels rather than sell them to eager buyers. This practice allowed the estate to develop a unique and rich inventory of aged spirits over time.
In the mid-1990s, Duflo hired Jean-Jacques Bordes as cellar master. Following Duflo's passing, Bordes continued to manage the estate until his retirement in 2024, when he passed the responsibility to his son, Florient. Florient now resides on the property with his family, demonstrating a deep commitment to the estate's legacy.
Domaine du Carpoulat's Armagnac production is characterized by traditional methods, with a focus on preserving the unique characteristics of the Ténarèze terroir. The Bordes family's extensive knowledge and passion for Armagnac production have deeply influenced the estate's quality and history over the decades.
What does a vintage on the label mean?
It is the harvest year the eau-de-vie was distilled from. A bottle listed as vintage 1987 and 37 years old means it was harvested in 1987 and spent 37 years in barrel before it was transitioned into a demijohn or bottled.

How should I store my Armagnac bottles?
Keep bottles upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Sealed bottles should keep indefinitely as long as stored in the proper conditions. An opened bottle is at its best over the following year or two, and once the fill level goes below 1/2 it is best to finish within the coming months or transition liquid to a smaller bottle to avoid potential oxidation.
