Description

The history of Jean Cavé began in 1883 with a winegrower in Lannepax, France. This house has seen four generations succeed one another, each dedicated to the craft of Armagnac. Today, the team continues under the precious guidance of Henri Cavé, the fourth generation, and they have built one of the most beautiful collections of vintage Armagnac in the world.

The second cask we have released at over 60 years of age, this extraordinary barrel yielded only 66 bottles and represents a masterclass in traditionally aged Armagnac. In 2023, the spirit reached its peak maturity, and was transferred from oak into a demijohn, allowing it to continue its slow, graceful transformation. Unmistakable antique notes are balanced by a refined sweetness and lingering vitality. This release is a tribute to those who cherish the finest expressions of old-world Armagnac, where patience, heritage, and time converge in rare and remarkable harmony.

The producer

Jean Cavé

Founded in 1883 in the village of Lannepax, Maison Jean Cavé has more than 140 years of history in the heart of Armagnac. The house began when Jean Cavé, already a local winegrower, established himself as a distiller and éleveur alongside his wife and two sons.

Over the following century, four generations of the Cavé family refined the house’s approach to distillation, maturation, and the careful preservation of vintage Armagnac. This continuity allowed Jean Cavé to build an extraordinary library of old eaux-de-vie spanning generations, with vintages reaching deep into the house’s history.

Today, Jean Cavé continues to draw on the knowledge of Henri Cavé, the fourth generation of the family, maintaining a direct connection to the traditions established by his ancestors. That legacy is perhaps best represented by the remarkable depth of Armagnac preserved within its cellars.

Few Armagnac houses possess such an extensive historical inventory. Alongside an extraordinary collection of old vintages, Jean Cavé is home to one of the largest paradise rooms in Gascony, where precious Armagnacs rest in glass demijohns, some dating back more than a century. Together, they form a remarkable liquid archive of generations of Armagnac history.

What does a vintage on the label mean?

It is the harvest year the eau-de-vie was distilled from. A bottle listed as vintage 1987 and 37 years old means it was harvested in 1987 and spent 37 years in barrel before it was transitioned into a demijohn or bottled.

How much does shipping cost?

Flat rate shipping is $19.99 for orders of one to six bottles and $12.99 for merchandise-only orders. Full terms are in the shipping policy.

How should I store my Armagnac bottles?

Keep bottles upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Sealed bottles should keep indefinitely as long as stored in the proper conditions. An opened bottle is at its best over the following year or two, and once the fill level goes below 1/2 it is best to finish within the coming months or transition liquid to a smaller bottle to avoid potential oxidation.
